Zionism’s Catch-22: Apparently the Jews Forgot to Ask Permission
Apparently Zionism began in 1897.
Really.
Thats the story now.
A bunch of Jews were sitting around Europe one afternoon, probably bored, and somebody said:
“Hey, anyone fancy inventing a completely fake connection to Jerusalem?”
And another guy said:
“Excellent idea. Lets fabricate about 3,000 years of history first, otherwise some smug jackass on the internet might question us in 2026.”
So they invented Abraham.
Then Isaac.
Then Jacob.
Then King David.
Then Jerusalem.
Then Hebrew.
Then Judea.
Then Jewish coins.
Then two Temples.
Then several empires conveniently recorded wars against Jews in Judea.
Then they buried archaeological evidence absolutely everywhere.
Then they somehow travelled backwards through time and convinced generations of Jews to pray toward Jerusalem.
Very thorough conspiracy.
Almost suspiciously thorough.
Or, and stay with me here because this gets complicated:
Maybe the Jews were actually from there.
I know.
Crazy shit.
Someone alert the sociology department.
According to Jewish tradition our story starts with Abraham arriving in the Land of Canaan thousands of years ago.
Abraham apparently didnt understand modern diplomacy.
The lunatic just went.
No UN resolution.
No human-rights NGO briefing.
No Belgian foreign minister looking constipated behind a podium.
No student encampment.
No emergency session.
No one from Amnesty arriving with a clipboard asking Abraham if Sarah’s tent complied with international law.
He just showed up.
The absolute bastard.
Then Isaac.
Then Jacob, who becomes Israel.
Then the Children of Israel.
Then an entire civilization becomes rooted in the land.
Jerusalem.
Judah.
Judea.
Hebrew.
Kings.
Temples.
Coins.
Wars.
Religious traditions.
National memory.
An absolutely ridiculous amount of Jewish crap for a place that apparently Jews just randomly discovered sometime around the invention of the steam engine.
Honestly history can be a real asshole.
There were two Jewish commonwealths.
Both eventually fell.
Conquerors came.
Jews were exiled.
Jews returned.
Conquerors came again.
Rome smashed Jewish sovereignty, devastated Jerusalem, destroyed the Second Temple and scattered huge numbers of Jews around the ancient world.
Now according to the International Rules of Indigenous Peoples, subsection Apparently-We-Made-This-Up-Yesterday, that should have been the end.
Sorry Jews.
You lost.
Game over.
Please surrender your culture, language, religion, collective memory and ancestral identity at reception.
Take a number.
Your history will be disposed of within 7-10 business days.
Except Jews are absolutely terrible at disappearing when other people want them too.
They remembered Jerusalem.
For centuries.
Then more centuries.
Then alot more centuries.
Prayed toward it.
Mourned it.
Wrote about it.
Dreamed about it.
Said “Next year in Jerusalem.”
Again.
And again.
And again.
For generations.
Which was apparently perfectly acceptable.
Because as long as Jews were crying about Jerusalem from Warsaw, Baghdad, Fez or wherever else they happened to be, everybody thought it was adorable.
Very spiritual.
Very moving.
Very Jewish.
“Next year in Jerusalem.”
Beautiful tradition.
Then Jews committed the unforgivable crime.
Somebody said:
“Hang on. Why the hell not this year?”
And suddenly all hell broke loose.
Whoa whoa whoa.
You were supposed to sing about Jerusalem.
Not actually go there.
You were supposed to pray toward Zion.
Not buy a house there.
You were supposed to remember your homeland.
Not do anything completely insane like… return to your homeland.
You maniacs.
And there it is.
The Zionist Catch-22.
Jews may yearn for Zion forever, as long as they never actually get on the bloody boat.
Then came modern political Zionism.
Herzl did not invent the Jewish connection to Israel.
Herzl was born thousands of years too late for that gig.
He didnt invent Jerusalem.
Didnt invent Hebrew.
Didnt invent Jewish peoplehood.
Didnt invent the Torah.
Didnt invent the idea of returning.
He didn’t sit in Vienna one afternoon, spin a globe, point randomly and yell:
“THERE! That random desert place nobody in Judaism has ever heard about!”
Modern Zionism did something much more irritating.
It took Jewish history seriously.
It said maybe “Next year in Jerusalem” didnt have to remain the national equivalent of “I’ll start dieting Monday.”
Maybe Jews could actually go home.
Worse.
Maybe Jews could govern themselves.
Oh dear God.
Now we had a problem.
Because Europe had spent centuries telling Jews:
YOU DONT BELONG HERE.
Fine.
Were leaving.
WHERE THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOUR GOING?
Home.
YOU DONT HAVE A HOME.
Israel.
NOT THAT ONE.
Why?
BECAUSE YOUR EUROPEAN.
You literally just spent centuries telling us we weren’t European.
THAT WAS DIFFERENT.
Different how?
STOP BEING DIFFICULT.
And thus was created perhaps humanities greatest bureaucratic achievement:
THE INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT OF WHERE JEWS ARE ALLOWED TO EXIST
Rules are very simple.
Rule One: Jews in Europe are foreigners.
Rule Two: Jews in Israel are Europeans.
Rule Three: Jews should assimilate.
Rule Four: Jews are incapable of assimilation because there a separate people.
Rule Five: Peoples deserve self-determination.
Rule Six: Obviously not like that.
Rule Seven: Jews should defend themselves.
Rule Eight: Not that effectively.
Rule Nine: Jews should stop depending on others for protection.
Rule Ten: Why the hell do Jews need an army?
Rule Eleven: Historical connections matter.
Rule Twelve: Please stop mentioning Jewish history, your making everyone uncomfortable.
Very coherent system.
Absolutely no holes in it whatsoever.
A masterpiece.
Then Zionists started returning and building things.
This really pissed people off.
Because its one thing to have a theory.
Its another thing when the damn theory starts constructing universities.
Farms.
Hospitals.
Roads.
Cities.
Schools.
Companies.
Political institutions.
Defense organizations.
And one particularly obnoxious achievement:
Hebrew came roaring back as an everyday spoken language.
Which has to be one of the funniest parts of the entire “foreign colonizer” argument.
These are apparently the worst colonizers in recorded history.
Normal colonizers arrive and impose there own language.
Zionists arrived and said:
“Quick everybody, resurrect the ancient indigenous language.”
Brilliant.
Somewhere the British Empire was watching this thinking:
“Guys, your doing colonialism completely wrong.”
Then Zionism committed its greatest sin.
Not nationalism.
Not politics.
Not immigration.
No.
Something far worse.
It bloody worked.
And that screwed everything up.
Because dead Jews are easy.
People love dead Jews.
Dead Jews get museums.
Memorials.
Plaques.
Speeches.
Candles.
Very moving speeches too.
“Never again.”
Everybody dresses nicely.
Everyone looks solemn.
A violin might appear.
Fantastic.
Living Jews with tanks?
Now everyone gets nervous.
Because living Jews have opinions.
Living Jews vote.
Living Jews build.
Living Jews say no.
Living Jews occasionally tell foreign ministers to get stuffed.
Living Jews have an Air Force.
And this apparently wasnt what some people understood “Never Again” to mean.
Apparently it meant:
“Never again shall Jews be massacred, assuming preventing the massacre doesn’t become geopolitically awkward.”
Whoops.
Misunderstanding.
Our bad.
Jews without power?
“Why didnt they defend themselves?”
Jews with power?
“Why are they so aggressive?”
Jews without an army?
“Such tragic victims.”
Jews build an army?
“Very concerning.”
Jews rely on Europe?
“Jews need independence.”
Jews stop relying on Europe?
“Wait, not THAT much independence.”
Jews pray for Jerusalem?
“A beautiful ancient tradition.”
Jews control Jerusalem?
“This requires an emergency conference immediately.”
Its not political theory anymore.
Its a bloody Monty Python sketch being performed by diplomats who somehow got nuclear security clearances.
Then 1948 happened.
Israel declared independence.
The Third Jewish Commonwealth.
And yes, I know this phrase causes some peoples brains to make the Windows 95 shutdown noise.
Third?
Wait.
You mean there were others?
Correct.
Thats why its called the THIRD one, Trevor.
This isn’t advanced mathematics.
One.
Two.
Three.
The Third Jewish Commonwealth does not mean ancient Israel and modern Israel are identical political systems.
Obviously they arent.
David didn’t have WhatsApp.
Solomon wasn’t arguing with the Supreme Court.
Nobody in the First Temple period was filling out Israeli municipal paperwork and wondering why the woman at window number six has gone to lunch for four and a half hours.
It means Jewish sovereign political life existed before, was destroyed, and modern Jewish sovereignty was established again.
Reestablished.
Thats the word that apparently causes seizures in certain academic departments.
Reestablished.
Not invented out of thin air.
Not some bunch of Poles stepping off a boat saying “Nice place, what’s a Jerusalem?”
Reestablished.
And now came the most hilarious part.
Israel had to prove its right to exist.
Again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
No other country seems to have received this subscription package.
France wakes up.
Still France.
Britain wakes up.
Still Britain.
Belgium wakes up, disappointingly still Belgium.
Japan?
Still Japan.
Israel wakes up:
“GOOD MORNING ISRAEL. YOUR FREE TRIAL OF NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY HAS EXPIRED.”
Excuse me?
“Please re-enter your historical justification.”
Again?
“Yes.”
We did it yesterday.
“New reporting period.”
We did it last week.
“Different department.”
We did it in 1948.
“Document no longer valid.”
Why?
“Your tone.”
So every morning Israel apparently has to log into some global customer-service portal.
Username: JEWISH_STATE

Roman records describing Jews in Judea?
Your session has expired.
Wonderful.
Absolutely brilliant.
Meanwhile nobody makes Britain explain itself every Thursday morning.
Nobody drags Italy into a conference room and says:
“Before we continue, Giuseppe, please establish continuity from the Roman Republic.”
Nobody demands Denmark justify Denmark.
Nobody asks Saudi Arabia to submit a PowerPoint entitled “Why We Get To Be Here.”
But Israel?
Apparently its sovereignty comes with a Netflix password that needs verification every thirty days.
And people wonder why Israelis become sarcastic.
We live in a country where a foreign correspondent can arrive Monday, spend Tuesday eating hummus in Tel Aviv, visit Jerusalem Wednesday, and by Thursday publish 2,300 words explaining the Jewish relationship to the land to people whos grandparents are buried here.
The balls on that are magnificent.
You almost have to admire it.
Almost.
Then theres the social-media historians.
These magnificent creatures.
They discover Israel at 11:14 AM.
Watch three videos.
Read half a Wikipedia paragraph.
At 2:30 they have solved the Arab-Israeli conflict.
By dinner they are explaining Jewish identity.
By bedtime they have redesigned the Middle East.
Next morning they post:
“Here’s what Jews need to understand…”
No no.
Please.
Continue.
Tell us about our own civilization, Professor TikTok.
Maybe afterward you can explain sushi to Japan.
The arrogance is breathtaking.
Its like breaking into somebody’s kitchen, opening their refrigerator and shouting:
“Let me explain your grandmother’s recipe.”
Sit down Kyle.
Your ring light is overheating.
And then theres the experts.
God bless the experts.
There is seemingly no subject on earth on which more people have become experts after reading less.
Zionism?
“Oh yes, I’ve researched extensively.”
Really?
“What did you read?”
“Several posts.”
Books?
“No.”
Jewish history?
“Not really.”
Hebrew?
“No.”
Ever been to Israel?
“No.”
Studied Ottoman history?
“No.”
British Mandate?
“Sort of.”
Second Temple period?
“What?”
Fantastic.
Get this person a microphone immediately.
Preferably at the United Nations.
And this brings us to my favorite modern intellectual circus trick:
The argument that Jews are somehow simultaneously too indigenous and not indigenous enough.
Jews retained an ancient identity?
“Nationalist mythology.”
Jews assimilated abroad?
“See, there European.”
Jews preserved Hebrew?
“Religious.”
Jews revived Hebrew?
“Nationalist.”
Jews stayed in the land?
“Tiny minority.”
Jews returned to the land?
“Foreigners.”
Its genius.
The conclusion is predetermined and then the argument reverse-engineered around it like some cheap IKEA bookshelf missing six screws.
No matter what the Jew does, WRONG.
The Jew could arrive carrying King David’s harp, a Dead Sea Scroll under one arm and an archaeological excavation permit under the other and someone would still pop out from behind a shrub shouting:
“SETTLER COLONIALISM!”
Mate.
At this point King David himself could rise from the dead and some NGO intern would ask him for proof of residency.
“Mr David, can you demonstrate continuous domicile?”
“I was king here.”
“That’s anecdotal.”
“My palace is literally underneath you.”
“Power imbalance.”
“Goliath tried to kill me.”
“Please don’t derail the conversation.”
You couldnt write this crap.
Actually apparently I just did.
And please understand something else.
Israel being historically connected to Jewish civilization does not magically make every Israeli politician correct.
Have you met Israeli politicians?
For the love of God.
We dont even think Israeli politicians are always correct.
Israelis disagree recreationally.
Its practically a national sport.
Put four Israelis in a room and within ten minutes you’ve got seven opinions, two new political parties, somebody threatening elections and one guy yelling that everyone else doesn’t understand Menachem Begin.
A dispute about a parking space in Israel can become a constitutional crisis before breakfast.
A disagreement over a synagogue chair can last longer than some European kingdoms.
We are not exactly a people known for obedient ideological uniformity.
Thats sort of the point.
Sovereignty means Jews get to have our own arguments.
Our own elections.
Our own idiots.
Our own geniuses.
Our own bureaucracy.
Our own scandals.
Our own triumphs.
Our own failures.
Our own decisions.
Thats what political self-determination actually looks like.
Not perfection.
Not some magical Jewish Disneyland where everybody holds hands while David Ben-Gurion rides a unicorn through Jerusalem.
A real country.
With taxes.
Traffic.
Coalitions.
Missiles.
Beaches.
Startups.
Synagogues.
Nightclubs.
Soldiers.
Farmers.
Ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.
Arab cities.
Druze villages.
Russian supermarkets.
Moroccan grandmothers who can feed a battalion.
And Israeli bureaucracy, which may be our most convincing proof that we are a normal country because no divine miracle could possibly have designed this system.
You can return to the ancestral homeland after two thousand years.
You can revive Hebrew.
You can build a state.
You can survive wars.
You can build universities and hospitals and companies.
You can send satellites into space.
But you forgot Form 17.
No appointment for you.
Come back Tuesday.
No, not this Tuesday.
Why?
Holiday.
Which holiday?
Doesn’t matter.
Bring three copies.
But the website says two.
Website is wrong.
Can I email it?
No.
Why?
Computer system.
Can I speak to the manager?
He’s on vacation.
When’s he back?
After the holidays.
Which holidays?
All of them.
Welcome to Zion.
This is the Third Jewish Commonwealth ladies and gentlemen.
We waited two thousand years for this, and now we’re standing at Misrad Hapnim because someone’s birth certificate needs an apostille.
Honestly, its beautiful.
But underneath all the jokes theres one thing that Zionism changed that is deadly serious.
For centuries somebody else had the keys.
Somebody else decided whether Jews could stay.
Whether Jews could enter.
Whether Jews could own property.
Whether Jews could practice professions.
Whether Jews were protected.
Whether Jews were tolerated.
And sometimes whether Jews got to live.
Zionism changed the arrangement.
The Jews got the keys.
And holy crap did that upset people.
Because suddenly Jews weren’t petitioners.
We weren’t standing outside the palace asking His Excellency if perhaps this year he might refrain from expelling us.
We werent waiting for the local ruler to decide whether a pogrom was unfortunate enough to intervene in.
We weren’t asking permission to exist.
We became responsible for ourselves.
Which means responsibility when we screw up too.
Because sovereignty comes with consequences.
Thats real adulthood for a nation.
But apparently Jewish adulthood is very upsetting to people who preferred us as historical children.
Quiet.
Dependent.
Grateful.
Memorialized.
Preferably sepia-toned.
Sorry.
Wrong century.
The Third Jewish Commonwealth is alive.
Its loud.
Its argumentative.
Its deeply imperfect.
Its astonishing.
And it exists.
Which apparently remains deeply offensive to people who believe Jewish sovereignty requires their personal approval.
It doesnt.
Thats probably the funniest part.
Imagine believing an entire country of millions of people is sitting around waiting for your Instagram carousel to determine whether they can remain sovereign.
“Guys stop everything.”
“What happened?”
“Sophie from Portland posted eight slides.”
“My God.”
“What does she say?”
“She says Zionism is problematic.”
“Pack Jerusalem. Were finished.”
Ben-Gurion should’ve thought of this.
No tanks.
No diplomats.
Just Canva.
And so here we are.
After Abraham.
After Jerusalem.
After the kingdoms.
After exile.
After two thousand years of memory.
After modern Zionism.
After independence.
After everything.
And the argument we’re apparently still having is:
“Are the Jews allowed to be home yet?”
Honestly?
What a stupid bloody question.
There is no cosmic hotel receptionist stamping Jewish passports.
There is no international landlord holding the spare key to Jerusalem.
And there certainly isn’t some twenty-something idiot with a podcast who gets veto power over Jewish history because he learned the word “colonialism” last semester and has been swinging it around ever since like a toddler who found a hammer.
The Jewish national story didnt begin in 1897.
1897 was one chapter.
1948 wasn’t the beginning either.
It was the political restoration.
The Third Jewish Commonwealth.
And Zionism at its most basic is not the terrifying mystical riddle its critics sometimes make it out to be.
Its really not that damn complicated.
Jews are a people.
Jews have an ancestral homeland.
Jews maintained a connection to it across centuries.
Modern Jews rebuilt political sovereignty there.
Now they argue endlessly about what to do with it.
Congratulations.
You have discovered Zionism.
No 14-week seminar required.
No interpretive dance.
No emergency conference in Geneva.
No idiot holding a megaphone.
No breathless newspaper op-ed entitled “Israel At A Crossroads” for the 7,943rd consecutive week.
Just history.
Messy, ugly, unbelievable history.
And maybe thats why the whole argument becomes so absurd.
For centuries the message was:
Jews, go home.
So the Jews went home.
And the response became:
NO YOU MORONS, NOT THAT HOME.
Which home then?
SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Where?
NOT HERE.
Where is here?
WHEREVER YOU ARE.
And there it is.
The whole bloody thing.
The Zionist Catch-22.
Remember Jerusalem.
But dont return.
Pray for Jerusalem.
But dont govern it.
Be defenseless and we’ll mourn you.
Defend yourself and we’ll condemn you.
Be a minority and we’ll tell you assimilation failed.
Build sovereignty and we’ll tell you nationalism is dangerous.
Trust other countries with your safety.
But also remember what happened last time.
Fantastic advice.
Really.
No notes.
Except one.
We stopped asking.
And that may be the most important thing Zionism ever did.
Not because Jews suddenly became perfect.
God help us, absolutely not.
But because Jewish existence stopped being a permission slip waiting for somebody else’s signature.
So the diplomats can keep issuing statements.
The professors can keep hosting panels.
The activists can keep screaming slogans.
The social-media historians can keep explaining ancient Judea from there bedroom in Minnesota.
The committees can meet.
Subcommittees can be established.
Working groups can produce findings.
Europe can express “grave concern” until the sun burns out.
Some exhausted Israeli spokesman can respond.
Another emergency session can begin.
A report can be commissioned.
A counter-report can dispute the report.
Six people can write op-eds about the report.
Kyle can make a TikTok.
And meanwhile the Third Jewish Commonwealth will wake up the next morning.
Kids will go to school.
Soldiers will stand guard.
Farmers will work fields.
Programmers will complain about their managers.
Politicians will scream at each other.
Somebody will pray at the Kotel.
Somebody in Tel Aviv will order sushi at midnight.
Some grandmother will insist you haven’t eaten enough despite the fact youve consumed the caloric output of a medium-sized nation.
And somewhere on Route 1, before dawn, an Israeli will be driving peacefully for approximately eleven seconds before another Israeli cuts him off, honks like the Messiah himself is blocking traffic, sticks his hand out the window and begins an entirely unnecessary argument.
Abraham would be proud.
Probably confused.
But proud.
Welcome home.

TL;NR
I loved this! I am not Jewish but this made me wish I was. It summed up all I had read/heard over the years and I was laughing to myself at how brilliant this piece is. Thank you. Yep no one has the right to object to Israel.
