We’ve gotten so used to arguing over whether this president, that prime minister, this foreign minister, or that collection of professional diplomats is “right” or “wrong” about Israel that we’ve forgotten something much more basic:
Why the hell is Israel constantly everybody else’s national group project and punching bag?
Leave us alone.
Seriously.
We don’t tell France how to fix the slums of Marseille. We don’t lecture Britain about the Islamization of Birmingham. We don’t hold emergency international conferences every time Belgium screws something up. We don’t demand that Jordan redesign its borders, Turkey reconsider its military doctrine, or France explain every police operation to 190 countries before breakfast.
We don’t tell you how to run your country, so don’t you dare tell us how to run ours!
Stop telling us where and what we can build. We won a war, we won our land back, and we are building the Zionist dream! So shut the hell up!
Israel is a sovereign country. We have elections. We have courts. We have an army. We have political arguments so vicious that Israelis can turn a discussion about parking into a constitutional crisis. We are perfectly capable of arguing among ourselves without Emmanuel Macron arriving from Paris to explain Jewish security to Jews.
And then Macron went to the United Nations and produced a statement so detached from reality that it deserves to be preserved in a museum of diplomatic bullshit.
Speaking about Judea and Samaria, which he naturally called “the West Bank,” Macron declared that Hamas had “never been active” there.
That is not an interpretation.
It is not a disagreement over borders.
It is not some subtle question of international law.
It is false.
Hamas has maintained active terror networks and fanatical supporters in Judea and Samaria and has been responsible for slaughtering Jews. Even the liberals reporting on Macron’s speech immediately noted that Hamas has long had a presence of violence and destruction in Judea and Samaria and has carried out attacks against Israelis there.
This is precisely why we are so damn furious when foreign leaders lecture us about our security. They can stand behind a marble podium in New York, confidently announce something demonstrably untrue about the terrorist organization that massacres Israelis, and then proceed to explain what security arrangements Israel should accept. Screw you!
Forgive us if we decline the tutorial on how to screw your people over!
And French Jews must pay very close attention to the atmosphere around them, because France has its own history with antisemitism that nobody gets to erase with elegant speeches about human rights.
Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish French army officer falsely convicted of treason amid a vicious antisemitic campaign that divided France. France’s own Justice Ministry describes the period as one in which antisemitism had become virulent.
Then came Vichy.
The Vichy government collaborated with Nazi Germany in the persecution and deportation of Jews. French police participated directly in the roundups. In July 1942, French police arrested roughly 13,000 Jews in Paris during the Vél d’Hiv roundup. Families were torn apart, and Jews were ultimately sent toward extermination.
Modern France is Vichy France. We Jews have earned the right to remember history without being told otherwise by liberal elite thugs.
And today there is one enormous difference.
Israel exists.
There is Jerusalem. There is Tel Aviv. There is Haifa. There is Netanya, where occasionally you hear enough French that you could be forgiven for wondering whether someone relocated part of Paris to the Mediterranean and added better weather.
There are French-speaking communities, schools, synagogues, businesses, and families throughout Israel.
For French Jews wondering about their future, aliyah is not a fantasy, and Israel is not an abstraction on a UN map.
It is a real country.
A Jewish country.
A place where Jews do not need the permission of Emmanuel Macron, the United Nations, Jordan, Turkey, or anybody else to exist as Jews.
And perhaps that is the part so many international leaders still cannot quite process.
For two thousand years, the world became accustomed to discussing the Jews while the Jews had very little power to answer.
That era is finished.
You can criticize Israel.
You can condemn Israel.
You can summon conferences about Israel, pass resolutions about Israel, issue communiqués about Israel, and spend another afternoon at the United Nations explaining Israel to Israelis.
But you no longer get to decide whether the Jewish people have a country.
We already built it.
Now kindly leave us the hell alone.
