Even my own few cousins learned the wrong lessons: trying to fit in, be the “good” Jew, even vocally condemning Israel for not being nice enough. My parents generation have almost no voice now so I decided I have to be their voice. And that is what I’m trying to do. Israeli voices like yours are so important and inspirational to me. One suggestion. Yonah, which was spoken of during Yom Kippur in our shul was SHOWING UP. We all need to do this if it is not a financial burden.
American Jews have stopped coming to Israel.
I remember so well in 2003, in the middle of the second Intifada, we went when so many other Jewish Groups cancelled out of fear. We stopped at the usual places and couldn't help but notice, we were one of 2 "Jewish" buses present, while the Evangelical Christians outnumbered us 12 to 2. I felt sad and ashamed. It was so worth it spiritually to support Israel in that way, and we felt like family, with such gratitude from people there for just SHOWING UP.
Now, so many of fairly observant Jewish people we know say they have not been to Israel since before October 7th. For me, I can't judge. BUT, the people of Israel are our family. If, HaShem forbid, one of my family members is sick, injured, or emotionally distraught, I would hope I'd SHOW UP. I also know several other people whose kids are living in Israel and will go there for less than a week, at great expense, to just check in or go to an event.
So, we are going to SHOW UP after Simchat Torah with another couple, after the rest felt uncomfortable, and join our Ahm Yisrael. It's the least we can do.
Yonah, I am happy you take this global anti-Semitism, anti-Jew, anti- Zionist, anti-Israel personally. You should, as should every Jew on the face of this planet. I am tired of being criminalized for the purpose of ignorant hatred. G-d said that those that kill Jews will suffer the same fate. Know that the words of G-d are the truth. The Lord has chosen the Jews to deliver His commandments and rewarded them with the State of Israel.
